HAVING spent much of her artistic life working with various musicians, Revonia Ndaba is now ready to enter the music scene to chart her musical path.
Revonia has collaborated with numerous artistes, including POZee, Skhue Mpofu, Rockford Rocky Josphat, Chase Skuza and Sandra Ndebele, as a dancer. Born at Mpilo Hospital 38 years ago, she received her education at Mzilikazi Primary, St Bernard’s, Sobukazi High and Bungwe High Schools in Filabusi.
She is working on a four-track album, Isiphiwo, set for launch on October 5, this year.
“I started my career with a dance group called Simunye while in Grade Seven. I have worked with several top artistes as a dancer. My solo music career could have started in 2012, but financial challenges grounded me. This was the time I worked with Chase Skuza as a dancer and curtain raiser, singing songs from our legends, including Busi Ncube and my great inspiration, Beater Mangethe,” she said.
Revonia mentioned that her entrance into the music scene was inspired by a meeting with music promoter, Eliam Phiri of Eliam Productions, who pledged to assist her. Phiri was concerned that she was only focusing on dancing, having seen her singing talent.
“He facilitated my curtain-raising for Mlambos Express Band’s album launch last year. I grabbed the opportunity with both hands and have never looked back since. I have been working on my songs, which will be released on 5th October with his financial backing,” she said.
Revonia is challenging Rhumba stereotypes by venturing into the male-dominated genre. She also has a passion for Afro-jazz.
“The album features four songs: Isiphiwo, Zinto Zijikile, Olunjani and Ndichakumirira. Three of the songs are Rhumba, while one is Afro-jazz to cater to different audiences. I know few women who have made it via the Rhumba ticket, but I will be an example. I’ve always wanted to do this, so the time is now,” she said.
The mother of two recalls her unforgettable moment in the artistic scene when she trended some years back after grabbing Rhumba musician, Chase Skuza’s private parts, when he failed to pay them for a show in South Africa. She said they have since reconciled and that past is buried.
“I urge music fans to give me a chance and they will not regret it. I appeal for their support to grow as a musician. We are busy preparing for the launch to provide top-notch entertainment to the revellers who will attend the show,” she said. — @themkhust
