MATABELELAND South Rural Infrastructure Development Authority (RIDA) acting provincial coordinator Mr Joseph Dube died yesterday after he was involved in a car accident along the Bulawayo- Beitbridge Highway.
Dube (54), driving a Toyota Hilux double cab, was on his way to Bulawayo from Gwanda when he lost control of the vehicle which veered off the road near the 114km peg area in Nsindi, just outside Gwanda Town. He died on the spot.
The incident occurred at around 6 pm.
Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Stanford Mguni confirmed the incident.
“I can confirm that we recorded a fatal incident where one person died at the 114km peg along Bulawayo-Gwanda Road. The driver who was headed towards Bulawayo lost control of the vehicle. The car overturned twice before landing on its left side and in the process, he was tossed out of the vehicle and landed about 15 meters away. He died on the spot,” he said.
Assistant Inspector Mguni urged motorists to exercise caution when travelling along the roads especially as the festive season drew close. He said motorists must also be wary when travelling along roads during the rainy season.
In a post on the Matabeleland South Provincial Development Committee meeting, Matabeleland South’s acting director of Local Government Mr Zachariah Jusah described Dube’s death as a huge loss not only to the province but the entire nation.
“On a sad note, yesterday we lost one of our hardworking and dedicated members.
A dark cloud has befallen us as Mat South Province especially the WASH Sector following the passing on of our PWSSC Chair Joseph Dube. He was the Acting Provincial RIDA Coordinator. He was involved in an accident yesterday evening,” he said.
