MATOBO Amateur Sports Association (Masa) in collaboration with Savemore Stores will hold a netball and soccer tournament to raise funds for youth projects in St Anna today.

The tournament is meant to work as a tool to give back to the community by Savemore Stores owner, Nothani Jiyane. It also seeks to keep the youth occupied and raise funds for buying sanitary pads for underprivileged girls in the district.

The participating teams are White Rangers, Maphisa FC, Khulumani Rangers, The Venue FC, Team X, FC St Joseph’s, Diggaz and Khulatshitshi.

Jiyani who is a local businessman said he is grateful to Masa for giving him a chance to play a role in empowering youth.

“This community nurtured me and the least I can do is chip in where possible by supporting the youth who are our future leaders. Maybe this initiative will be bigger if other willing business people rise up and play a pivotal role in the development of our community,” he said.

He said sports is a perfect platform to develop communities.

“This will ensure that youths stay out of bad behaviour and I hope the idea will be embraced by the whole community so that we come up with constructive ideas in uplifting one another,” Jiyane said.

Masa secretary Siqabukile Mongameli Dube said: “We are confident that these kinds of initiatives will play a major role in empowering youth and promote the spirit of belonging by countering the tendency of migrating to South Africa. We need to identify talent as this may open doors for some and see themselves representing the district and the country as a whole.”

Dube appealed to all business people in Matobo to contribute and invest in developmental programmes that seek to make the district a better place.
