TO celebrate literature and cultural reflection, 19-year-old author Phetha Mpala has launched her debut novel, “Amakhosilazi Esinyeyo”.
The book aims to shine a light on issues of cultural and moral decay within society. Mpala, currently an A-Level student at Amhlophe High School, articulated her intent behind the novel.
“We live in a society where gossiping reigns supreme,” she stated.
“My book explores how women interact with each other and the world, addressing issues such as irresponsible behaviour, crime, child abuse in schools, and the administrative failures to tackle these problems.”
The young author expressed deep gratitude to those who have supported her journey.
“It’s an incredible feeling to have scribbled and managed to publish my debut book,” she remarked.
“I owe a massive thank you to Tanaka Ndongera, Lindsay Lunga, and Arnold Brendon Malaba, who recognised my talent and helped nurture it, as well as my supportive family.”
With a mere three years of experience as a writer, Mpala’s passion for authorship was ignited by her love for Zimsec setbooks, which inspired her to explore the beauty of storytelling.
Reflecting on her challenges, she shared, “One of the hurdles I faced was the lack of resources. The book was handwritten on bond paper three years ago, and I had to take a risk by sending it to Harare to be typed by someone I barely knew. Finances were also a significant challenge, and I had to cover the costs myself.”
Balancing her studies with her writing aspirations has not been easy, but Mpala has adapted well.
“I started writing before O-Level, and now it feels like a natural part of my life,” she said.
In a heartfelt message to her fellow aspiring authors, Mpala emphasised the importance of writing as a tool for social change.
“Writing is a holy occupation and a smart weapon to amplify voices for the voiceless. Let’s utilise our high calling for the best.”
