THE Zimbabwe Tertiary Sports Union (ZTISU) games got underway in Bulawayo yesterday under the theme “Together we can achieve the extraordinary through sport”.

The games are being hosted by Hillside Teachers College and were officially opened by Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) regional deputy director Isaiah Mpofu at White City Stadium yesterday.

Mpofu said when properly managed, sport can be a unifier and challenged participants to show respect for competition rules.

“These games are all about building a better society and this can only be achieved if we continue to interact through sports.

“l urge all athletes to be at the forefront of this noble effort of unifying our beloved Zimbabwean society and eradicating gender imbalances,” said Mpofu.

The games are being sponsored by Delta Beverages through its Carling Black Label brand to the tune of US$40 000.

Delta Beverages Belmont Plant acting manager Mthulisi Nyoni pledged continued support for the games in future.

“We have been sponsoring the games for the past three years and we are proudly sponsoring these games this year as we continue to reward the champions at play. Sports play a pivotal role in building communities and resonate well with the brand’s manifesto.

“Carling Black Label will not only reward the achievers, but also reward efforts of the teams by sponsoring kits for two finalists in football, rugby, netball, volleyball and basketball,” said Nyoni.

Edward Chekure, the ZTISU president, urged athletes to exercise fair play.

“I want to congratulate all our athletes for making it up to this national event. Let’s all adhere to our code of conduct, which observes attributes of Ubuntu,” said Chekure.
