THE lighting of Christmas lights at the Central and Centenary Amphitheatre in Bulawayo on Wednesday evening marked the start of the festive holidays.

The switching on of the Christmas lights was presided over by the Mayor of Bulawayo, Solomon Mguni, and the junior mayor, Jewel Damunesa who took the opportunity to press the switch together. Also in attendance was former deputy prime minister Thokozani Khuphe.

Bulawayo residents did not disappoint as they came in numbers to witness the ceremony.

In his speech, the mayor said it was great to be able to host the event following a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This is the first Christmas lighting event after two years that were affected by Covid-19. Let us all prepare to enjoy the festive season in good health and in safety,” said the Mayor.

It was a great family outing with a number of children receiving early Christmas gifts after taking part in a quiz after watching the Nativity play which was amazingly acted out.

Entertaining the people were La Dee, Msiz’kay, Asante Mo and Hloseni Arts Ensemble.

Closing off the event was the much-loved fireworks display.
