THE Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) is scheduled to host a track and field selection meet at White City Stadium this coming weekend.

The event set for Saturday is meant to select a team to represent the country at the African Union Sports Council Region Five Youth Games (Ausc).

The Games are expected to take place in Maseru, Lesotho in December.

The Games were postponed in December last year due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic which paralysed the entire world. The decision to postpone the Games by 12 months was taken by the AUSC Region 5 Ministers’ Troika in July last year.

“We are certain we are going to have our first event in a long time this Saturday. It’s been a while since our athletes took to the track and we are excited that we are back to the track.

The event is a selection event for the Under 18 athletes who are going to represent the country at the AUSC games.

“We are inviting all under 18 athletes to this important selection event for AUSC Region 5 Games to be held at White City Stadium on the 25th of September 2021.The programme will commence at 0800hrs. Registration is free. This is open to athletes from other provinces as well,” said Watson Madanyika Bab chairperson.

The team for the AUSC games will constitute of 16 girls and 16 boys.

The AUSC Region 5 Youth Games are staged every two years and hosting by member countries is on a rotational basis in alphabetic order.

Except for last year when they were postponed, the Games have been held consistently since the inaugural tournament in Maputo, Mozambique, in 2004 and they bring together about 2 000 Under-18 athletes from the region.  — @innocentskizoe
