Gilbert Matiya (32), of 6436 Mkoba Village 18 in Gweru, was arraigned before magistrate Ms Rutendo Muchena on Monday facing charges of theft.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded in custody to tomorrow.

For the State, Mr Bonwell Balamanja told the court that on 25 June last year, the shop supervisor conducted a stock take.

He said during the period extending up to 4 August 2012, Matiya sold some of the stock in the shop and allegedly misappropriated some of the property, which included a black Superior double hot plate stove, a 40 inch Sharp colour television set, a 32 inch LG TV set, a Phillips DVD player, a Julia two door wardrobe, one lamp recharge light and a Sony DVD player, among other items.

The court heard that a stock supervisor conducted another stock take with Matiya, who allegedly failed to account for the property.

Mr Balamanja said Matiya as the shop manager, had the full responsibility  all the stock at the Gweru branch of TV Sales and Home. He said Matiya was in charge of receiving the stock and recording it before dispatching to customers.

The court heard that the stock supervisor advised the operation manager to report the matter to the police, which led to Matiya’s arrest.

The value of the allegedly stolen property is $4 039 and nothing was recovered.
