TWO deaths by drowning, along with a total of 12 health facilities, 84 schools, and 584 homesteads across the country, have been reported as damaged since the start of the rainy season, the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has reported.
According to its latest situational report, the deaths occurred in the Midlands and Matabeleland South provinces, respectively.
It said a 17-year-old boy drowned in the Ntale Dam, Bango Ward 10, and his body was recovered by community members before the police arrived to collect the deceased.
The CPU has since called for maximum supervision of children playing near dams and rivers, especially during the rainy season.
In terms of damage to buildings, Midlands province is the most affected, with 432 homesteads, 32 schools, four health facilities, a police station, and 15 Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) poles damaged.
Matabeleland North had 45 homesteads and nine schools damaged, while in Matabeleland South, 13 homesteads and an irrigation plant were damaged.
In Masvingo, the rains caused damage to 43 homesteads, seven health facilities, and 20 schools.
“The 2024/2025 rainfall season has commenced, and localized heavy downpours have been experienced in some parts of the country. Damages to houses and schools have been reported since the onset of the rainfall season. The government has activated all Civil Protection Structures at national and sub-national levels,” said the CPU in its report.
