VICE President Constantino Chiwenga has arrived in Hwange for the highly anticipated ground-breaking ceremony of a significant new energy project, which includes a 720MW thermal power plant and a 200MW solar power plant.

The event marks a pivotal moment in Zimbabwe’s efforts to enhance its energy infrastructure and address ongoing power shortages.

Spearheaded by Titan New Energy in partnership with Zesa Holdings, the project represents an investment of approximately US$1 billion.

It aims to respond to the challenges outlined in the National Development Strategy (NDS1) and Vision 2030, which seek to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy.

Scheduled for full construction completion by the end of 2028, the project is expected to generate an annual output of 5.76 GWh, significantly contributing to the country’s energy needs. This initiative is particularly crucial as Zimbabwe faces persistent electricity shortages that hinder economic development.

In addition to providing a stable power supply, the project is set to create numerous job opportunities, bolster the local economy, and contribute to environmental sustainability through its Waste-To-Energy Power Plant. By utilising waste residues and wastewater, the project aims to achieve zero emissions, thereby mitigating pollution.

The ground-breaking ceremony highlights the Government’s commitment to investing in renewable energy solutions and enhancing energy security for the nation.
