Villagers build police station

The new station, estimated to have cost thousands of dollars, was constructed using resources mobilised by the villagers from the area in collaboration with local business people.

The police officer Commanding Bulawayo suburban district, Chief Superintendent Fredrick Mbengwa, was the guest of honour at an event that was attended by the area MP Cde Clifford Sibanda, Chief Mtshane Khumalo, the business community and scores of villagers.

The new sub-station comprises a neatly painted building that has three offices and Blair toilets that are situated a few metres from the main structure.

The charge office has been furnished.

“We are very happy to officially open this new sub-station, which was built by the community. Construction started last June and it has been completed. People used their own resources to build this complex,” said Chief Supt Mbengwa.

He said the community, through Chief Mtshane, approached the police requesting to have a sub-station following an upsurge in cases of stocktheft.

“We approved the idea but did not have resources. The community met and organised itself and built this station.

“We applaud the community for this initiative,” said Chief Supt Mbengwa.
Chief Supt Mbengwa said the force had deployed five officers to the new station.

He urged the community to work closely with the police in fighting crime.

Chief Supt Mbengwa castigated corrupt tendencies by some officers and said the force would not hesitate to fire such elements.

He also warned members of the public to desist from fuelling corruption saying the police had no sacred cows.
“Corruption is a serious cancer that is killing our nation. As the police we have adopted a no-nonsense stance on laziness and corruption. We want to make corruption a dangerous and non-profitable business. As a district we envisage a crime-free society by 2020,” he said.

Speaking at the same occasion Cde Sibanda said the setting up of the new base station would increase interaction between the police and the community.

“For a long time we have heard problems of crime here especially stocktheft because of our proximity to the city of Bulawayo.

“From now on police officers are here with you to weed out crime.

“This is in line with President Mugabe’s desire to have police working closely with the community to preserve peace and uphold the law,” said the MP.

Chief Mtshane also paid tribute to the community for  building the station. He said the collective role of villagers and the police was needed if a crime-free society was to be realised.

Bulawayo suburban comprises  five stations that include Hillside, Donnington, Sauerstown, Queens Park and Airport.
