VICE-PRESIDENT Constantino Chiwenga, who is also the Minister of Health and Child Care, is set to officially commission the Kwekwe Infectious Diseases Hospital today.

Kwekwe City Council converted a disused beerhall into an infectious diseases hospital using devolution funds.

Acting Kwekwe District Development Co-ordinator (DDC) Mr Reason Machina said the facility will be commissioned at a time the district was operating without isolation centres.

“We are glad as a district with this achievement, as it will go a long way in easing the non-availability of isolation centres amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The facility is expected to come in handy, as we continue to battle the global pandemic,” said Mr Machina.

The hospital has a carrying capacity of 25 patients.
Besides Covid-19 patients, the hospital will also cater for tuberculosis, cholera and other infectious disease patients.

“We did not have such a facility as a district and we are grateful to Kwekwe City Council, which came up with the idea of converting the beerhall into an infectious disease hospital,” said Mr Machina.

Acting Kwekwe Town Clerk Dr Lucia Mnkandla said this was one of the major projects carried out by the local authority using devolution funds.

“We had to prioritise health as a council and decided to convert the beerhall, which was lying idle, into a health facility and here we are today,” said Dr Mnkandla.

This is the second beerhall the local authority has converted into a health facility after one in Mbizo 16.
