In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at combating crime, police in Bulawayo have unleashed an all-female Criminal Investigations Department (CID) unit, code-named Lozikeyi, dedicated to tackling complex criminal cases across the city.
Officially launched on July 5 this year, the crack team has already made significant strides in high-profile cases, including instances of serial rape and robbery.
The specialist Lozikeyi unit, named after the revered Queen Lozikeyi Dlodlo, who led the 1896 Ndebele uprising against British colonialism, comprises highly trained female officers.
The team’s dedication, skill, and tenacity have led to swift resolutions and apprehension of perpetrators, bringing a renewed sense of security to the residents of Bulawayo.
Team Lozikeyi boasts of solving cases such as that of serial rapist Prosper Bhule known as umalayitsha, who was sentenced to 232 years in prison.
This time around the “new sheriffs in town” apprehended two suspects, Jonathan Mkwebu (33) and Brilliant Mkosana (39), in connection with illegal possession of ivory.
Marking its debut appearance yesterday at the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court at Tredgold building the team reeled in the two suspects garbed in all-black attire, bulletproof vests, slinging assault rifles.
The accused appeared before regional magistrate Mr Joseph Mabeza, while Mr Dominic Moyo presented the case for the State.
The arrest details could not be discussed at length as the case is already before the courts. Arresting team leader Detective Assistant Inspector Lethubuhle Loreto Sibanda said police have taken a significant step towards gender equality and empowerment with the recent launch of an all-female CID crack team.
She said the team has been making waves within the law enforcement community since the launch by showcasing women’s talent and capability in traditionally male-dominated fields. “We are proud to introduce Team Lozikeyi, which embodies the spirit of resilience, dedication, and excellence.
This diverse group of talented female officers brings a unique perspective to the field of criminal investigation, challenging stereotypes and proving that gender is not a limitation but an asset,” said Det Asst Insp Sibanda.
Other police officers, beaming with pride, say team Lozikeyi’s swift and precise action not only highlights their skill and expertise but also serves as a testament to the effectiveness of diverse and inclusive law enforcement teams.
Det Asst Insp Sibanda said being part of the historic initiative has been both empowering and gratifying. “We are breaking barriers and demonstrating that women can excel in high-stakes and demanding roles. Our success in apprehending the suspects is a clear indication of our dedication to upholding the law and protecting our wildlife,” she said.
Det Asst Ins Sibanda said Team Lozikeyi marks a significant milestone in the quest for gender equality and inclusion within the police force.
She said by providing women with the opportunity to showcase their skills and talents in critical law enforcement roles, the police force is setting a powerful example for other institutions and organisations to follow.
“Team Lozikeyi is an invaluable asset to the police in Bulawayo and we look forward to seeing success in combating crime and upholding justice. We, like our male counterparts, undergo the same rigorous training and are undeterred by what criminals think or believe can be used against women. We are a no-nonsense team and we do not tolerate crime,” said Det Asst Insp Sibanda.
In their latest feat, the team arrested two men from Lower Gweru who were found in illegal possession of elephant tusks worth US$6 000.
The duo appeared before regional magistrate, Mr Joseph Mabeza and was remanded in custody until July 31.
Mr Tinashe Dzipe represented the pair. The duo initially pleaded guilty before seeking the services of an attorney.
In their submission, Mkwebu and Mkosana stated that they incorrectly admitted to the essential elements of the charge.
Bulawayo provincial deputy police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the introduction of team Lozikeyi has been a game-changer in crime-solving efforts.
“Their tireless commitment and strategic approach have resulted in the resolution of complex cases that previously seemed unsolvable,” she said.
Asst Insp Msebele said as part of an unofficial member of the team under the police department, she is honoured to be working alongside dedicated and talented female officers who are determined to make a difference in the community.
“Our focus remains on delivering justice and ensuring the safety of all residents in Bulawayo,” she said.
The launch of team Lozikeyi marks a significant milestone in the efforts to enhance law enforcement capabilities in Bulawayo.
The all-female crack team’s exploits serve as a testament to the expertise and capabilities of women in the police force, challenging traditional gender norms and stereotypes.
