LEGENDARY Afro-jazz musician Victor Kunonga who grew up in Bulawayo is in the city to reconnect with the community he grew up in by hosting community engagement programmes and performing in spaces that moulded him.

The artiste who did his primary and secondary schooling in the city is running a three-day programme that kicks off today at his former primary school, Hugh Beadle at 7am.

Thereafter, he will be at Northlea High School at 10am.

Kunonga’s manager, Simon Mzungu said all is in place for the engagements.

“Victor Kunonga grew up in Bulawayo where he attended Hugh Beadle Primary School and Northlea High School.

“He will be doing a tour of the schools on Friday morning where he will talk to the kids about taking up arts as a career and also raise awareness on mental health issues and drug abuse.”

Thereafter, Mzungu said Kunonga will lead an Environmental Day clean-up campaign at Sauerstown shopping centre, a neighbourhood where he lived when he was young, before staging a free show at the shopping centre at 6pm.

“We’ve got a police clearance for the clean-up at Sauerstown shopping centre along Beach Avenue.

“After the clean-up, we’ll have an hour-long free show at the venue in the evening as a community engagement and drug abuse campaign.

“All this Friday activity is under what we’re calling ‘The Victor Kunonga Homecoming community engagement’.”

drugs awareness campaign.

Tomorrow, Victor Kunonga will perform at a private function in the city.

Mzungu thanked E-two International, a sound and lighting company for assisting them with a PA system to use for their performance at the shopping centre as a way of supporting their cause.

“More collaborators have started coming on board to support Victor and his team  for both an early Environmental Day Commemoration and campaign against drug abuse,” said Mzungu. – @mthabisi_mthire
