WHITE City Stars Athletics Club will on October 9 host an open track championship at White City Stadium in Bulawayo, its first event since inception.

The academy was formed by veteran athletics administrator Manuel Mpofu in 2019, but has largely been inactive due to stringent Covid-19 lockdown measures from last year until they were eased a few weeks ago.

“The whole idea behind coming up with this academy is to nurture and groom talent, and expose it to the competitive world. The athletes will be assisted to obtain scholarships. We also want to assist less privileged, but talented athletes, with resources (school fees),” said Mpofu.

He is excited that the club would now be hosting its own activities.

“We wanted to host this event in June, but due to the strict lockdown, we pushed it back. We are excited that we now back on the track. This is a project we have been working on for a while now and it’s good to see it taking off.”

Athletes will compete in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, Mile, 5 000m, 10 000m and relays.

Registration fees are pegged at $300 per event per athlete for seniors and $200 per event for a junior athlete, with relay teams forking out $500. — @innocentskizoe
