Why most SA artistes are performing for 30 minutes Nkosazana Daughter performs at BAC Leisure

Following South African Amapiano musician Nkosazana Daughter’s under 30-minute performance at the Bulawayo Athletic Club on Monday, there was social media chaos, with some fans criticising organisers for deceiving fans.

Nkosazana Daughter arrived, snapped photographs, had a few drinks and perhaps had a snack or two, sang for less than 30 minutes, and then left, leaving dissatisfied fans begging for more.

This was not the first time a South African singer surprised the crowd by performing for a brief period. Siyathandana hit-maker Boohle did the same in November last year. Amaroto, another Amapiano act that was expected to appear and rip up the stage at the same venue, barely performed for 30 minutes in June.

This left the crowd expressing concern that organisers should announce the length of time the musicians would perform and let them determine whether their money is worth that time.

Music promoter, 3D Events Management managing director Mduduzi “Mdu” Mdlongwa who was behind Nkosazana’s show, said the contract determines the amount of time that the artistes will spend on the stage.

“When we book artistes, we send an email inquiring, and then contracts are sent to us. The contract stipulates the amount that is going to be paid for a specific time frame. At the end of the day, it’s up to us to decide which time frame best suits the budget.

“The contract that we signed with Nkosazana Daughter was worth the 30 minutes,” said Mdu.

South African music promoter Troy Tom said it is key to zone in on the number of songs that booked artistes have.

“Each song has its charge, so if one sings for 30 minutes, it has to be considered the number of songs one sang in that length of time. The length of songs is another contributing factor that has to be considered. She (Nkosazana Daughter) doesn’t have any album but has features. So, I think the 30 minutes that she performed was enough considering the aforementioned factors,” he said.

Commenting on an article that was published by Chronicle Showbiz on Nkosazana Daughter performing for 30 minutes, one commenter said local promoters should stop taking fans and revellers for granted, using a high-profile artiste to swindle money out of fans.

It seems like 30 minutes is what local promoters can afford to pay for, so music lovers may want to adapt to that.

However, there is a need for promoters not to overcharge the entrance fees considering that they will be well aware they paid for a performance of fewer than 10 songs.
