A WOMAN was jailed 5 years by the Harare Magistrates’ Court for contravening the Trafficking in Persons Act after trafficking a 2-day-old infant from South Africa to Zimbabwe.

In a statement on X, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said the mother sold the infant to Janet Maromo who transported the infant across borders.

The court found special circumstances in the case including Maromo’s bona fide mistake about adoption laws in both countries, her lack of sophistication and the role of the biological mother in influencing her actions.

Maromo was sentenced to five years imprisonment
