COMMENT: ZDF playing a pivotal role in national peace and security
A NATION’S security apparatus is its basis. No nation can develop socially, economically or politically if it is insecure.
That is why nations, or communities that are always at war are mere geographical expressions where hunger, disease, disorder, death and poverty rule.
We, thus, take very seriously the peace that is prevailing in our country. It is as a result of that peace that the country is developing as fast as it is doing.
The custodians of that peace and security and therefore development, are the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), whom we recognised yesterday.
President Mnangagwa, also the Commander-in-Chief of the ZDF, led the national commemoration of ZDF Day at Rufaro Stadium in Harare. Ministers of provincial affairs and devolution did the same at provincial venues in the country’s 10 provinces.
The events attracted thousands of people who appreciate the immense, essential work that the security structure does to secure them and the national interest. The cadres in camouflage have served their country so selflessly and bravely over the past 44 years.
The President praised them for their national service. He detailed the suite of strategies that the Government has to come up with to ensure that the women, men and officers are well taken care of so that they can concentrate fully on discharging their huge constitutional duty.
They enjoy non-monetary incentives and benefits such as civil service housing loans and the civil service vehicle purchase schemes. The Government is building homes for them as well.
“Further, my Government has expanded the transport fleet for the Defence Forces, through the procurement and delivery of an assortment of vehicles,” he said.
“Over and above housing units that are ready for occupation, Government will soon be embarking on the construction of 3 000 housing units for members of the ZDF. This is part of the comprehensive programme by my administration to increase affordable housing stock throughout the country.”
In terms of healthcare for members, he said the Government is committed to making sure that all military hospitals and health institutions have requisite modern equipment and adequate medicines.
The construction of the Defence Forces Referral Hospital at Manyame Air Force Base, is being accelerated, he added.
The members of ZDF deserve all this and much more. They are the foundation upon which this country is built. They are the essence of our being. Without them, there would be no Zimbabwe as we know it.
We salute them!
