Zica build national team

The Zimbabwe Indoor Cricket Association (Zica) will hold its first trial session at the Heath Streak Academy tomorrow to build a national team that will compete in the South Africa Indoor Cricket Association’s 10th Anniversary celebrations in Cape Town and Pretoria.

Zica chairperson Maxwell Gwaranapo said the second trial session will be held at Hawzart Cricket Academy in Harare on Sunday.

“We have been invited to participate in South Africa in their 10th anniversary celebrations so we are putting up a men’s team for the tour. All male cricketers from the age of 15 are eligible to come for trials,” said Gwaranapo.

Gwaranapo said the tour comes at the right time when the association is on the verge of reviving the sport, which has been in the doldrums in recent years due to lack of sponsorship.

The last time Zimbabwe took part in a global tournament was in the 1998 Indoor Cricket World Cup where they failed to win a single game.

In 2000, the country pulled out of the world Cup due to financial constraints.

Gwaranapo said they were hoping members of the team would share their knowledge by helping spread the sport around the country.

“We are aiming at making indoor cricket one of the popular sports in the country and we can only do that if we do well in big competitions.

This year there is a Junior World Cup in New Zealand and a Masters World Cup next year in South Africa so we are looking forward to being part of those major tournaments,” he said. – @khumzallen
