THE Zimbabwe university netball team made its second appearance at the 2018 World University Netball Championships by winning only two out of six matches.

The event, which is held biennially by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), was held at the Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, last week. Hosts Uganda were crowned winners of the 2018 competition after beating defending champions South Africa 44-43 in the final match. Despite starting this year’s tournament on a high note by beating Sri Lanka 44-31 and the United States of America 40-28, the Zimbabwe Varsity Gems found the going tough in other matches. They lost 36-54 to Kenya, 12-105 to former champions South Africa, 10-105 to Uganda and 40-45 to Singapore.

Speaking to the International University Sports Federation (FISU) website, Zimbabwe’s goal shooter Letwin Ncube said she believes their performance this year was an improvement compared to their inaugural show in 2012 when they only won once.

“We have learnt our lessons and I must say we have gained confidence,” Ncube said. This year’s championship attracted USA, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Kenya, South Africa and hosts Uganda.
