THE Harlington Shereni testimonial match that was set for this weekend has been put on hold with the organisers saying new dates would be announced in due course.

The match, set to feature the likes of Senegal’s El Hadji Diouf, Ivorian defender Emmanuel Eboue and Bonaventure Kalou, had been pencilled in for the giant National Sports Stadium this Saturday.

Zimbabwe players that were in line to feature in the high profile testimonial encounter include former Warriors skipper Benjani Mwaruwari, Norman Mapeza, Costa Nhamoinesu, Khama Billiat and Kingstone Nkhata.

The match is meant to raise funds for the Harlington Shereni Foundation, which aims to provide talented youths with the opportunity to improve their sporting talents and realise their dreams while maintaining their academic studies.

“We aren’t able to proceed with the match this weekend. We’ll advise of new dates that will suit all stakeholders in due course. Additionally, we’ll postpone all scheduled events like the dinner gala,” said Shereni, a former Caps United, Air Zimbabwe Jets and Dynamos left back.

Shereni started his football life outside the country just at the turn of the century for SR Delemont in Switzerland before moving to FC Istres in France in the 2003/2004 season.

He then joined French Ligue One side En Avant Guingamp and played for three seasons during which he made 71 appearances and scored five times between 2004 and 2007.

Shereni then moved to FC Nantes for another three seasons where he scored seven times in 48 appearances. He was sent on loan to Racing Club Strasbourg between 2008 and 2009, scoring four times in 26 matches before calling it quits.

Shereni would have been the second former player to organise a high profile testimonial match after Mwaruwari’s highly successful testimonial match in 2013 that saw stars like Diouf, Nwankwo Kanu, Lucas Radebe and Peter Ndlovu all featuring.
