FIVE children and two adults survived an inferno yesterday at St Peter’s Village on the outskirts of Bulawayo when two huts they were sleeping in caught fire.

Three of the children were in one of the two huts with their mother while the other two were sleeping with their aunt in the other hut.

The children are aged between one and 11 years. The fire is said to have started at around 1AM and it destroyed both huts and all the property that was inside.

Reason Sibanda, 38, said his wife Thando Dube woke up to burning blankets and ran for dear life with her children. He said he was in Botswana when the incident happened.

“I wasn’t around when this happened but my wife told me that she saw fire all over the house,” said Sibanda

“They all ran naked fearing the flames. The fire then caught another house where my sister was sleeping with other two kids.”

He said his family had lost all of its property, money, children’s birth certificates and school uniforms. Sibanda said he was now staying at his uncle’s home in the same area since his homestead was burnt.

He appealed for assistance from well-wishers.
