JOURNALISTS from Zimpapers dominated this year’s edition of the Mining Media Awards.

The awards were presented in Harare on Thursday.

Minister of Mines and Mining Development Cde Winston Chitando was the guest of honour.

Gibson Mhaka of Chronicle, Dumisani Nsingo of Sunday News, Obey Sibanda of Chronicle, Africa Moyo of Sunday Mail, Munyaradzi Musiiwa of Herald and Mukudzei Chingere of Sunday Mail all walked away with various awards for covering mining related issues.

Mhaka scooped the Health and Safety reporter of the year award, Chrome sector best reporter of the year award and overall mining sector reporter of the year award.

Sibanda walked away with the small scale and artisanal mining best reporter award.

Speaking after receiving the awards, Mhaka said: “I am pleased, honoured and humbled to win the three awards. This recognition of my work will spur me to work even harder.”

Mhaka attributed his success to teamwork in the newsroom.

“Winning these awards would not have been possible without the inspiration I have received from the editors, my seniors and colleagues,” said Mhaka.

Minister Chitando commended journalists for covering the mining sector which he said helped to market the sector to potential investors.

“The coverage of the mining sector by the media is commended because it is in line with the President (Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa)’s vision 2030 mantra. I applaud all the winners and all the other journalists who have not made it today and urge them to continue serving the country through reporting on such crucial matters,” said Cde Chitando. — @andile_tshuma
