Africa must fight the new imperialism A street in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgabo province

Stephen Mpofu, Perspective

YES, but our black continent should go beyond merely resisting to vanquishing the new colonial imperialism now rearing its ugly terrorist head south of the Sahara in particular.

We are talking here of an Africa that in decades of the struggle, armed in some cases, with precious lives being lost along the way — to break the yoke of our black race’s periphery status to those without knees who invaded our continent, plundered and ferried its economic riches back to their native lands beyond many waters, leaving us, natives, scratching the land which became the backyard of local urban centres where our foreign political and economic exploiters dwelt while their temporary economic and political paradise lasted before independence and freedom came to our continent via our own struggles for liberation from foreign, imperialist rule.

Today, political terrorism, previously notorious in some West African states threatens to scuttle the gains and freedoms of some countries in southern Africa with Mozambique a typical example of the evidence of terrorists and political extremism, both of which impel countries in Sadc, where Zimbabwe also belongs, to have in place without further much ado, drastic measures to nip in the bud, as it were, any machinations in store for the terrorists eyeing our beautiful country for their invasion.

To begin with, Mozambique, part of which has for a long time now been occupied by foreign terrorists, bringing any economic developments to the people there under siege null and void, should serve as a typical example of what might happen to Zimbabwe as well as other Sadc states if they keep their guard low against the insurgency whom a combined Sadc military force apparently failed to neutralise in Mozambique.

The foreign invaders in point here were invited by Mozambican political extremists after failing to remove the Frelimo government from power in that former Portuguese East African state.

Here, in our own independent Zimbabwe, some opposition political elements eager to be hoisted to power by any foreign force through all means possible, are known to be supportive of the economic sanctions imposed by the West and now ravaging our economy because their yearning for power which transcends the suffering of their fellow natives, including the plight of their own families which are not spared by the effect of the sanctions that the rest of the African continent and her progressive friends elsewhere in the global village are demanding that they be lifted forthwith so that our country can once again walk into brave new futures with heads and shoulders raised high for generations to come.

Any common sense, in the circumstances, obviously regards it as an imperative on the part of the legislatures of our country as well as those of fellow African states to pass laws that will take care of political extremists and other individuals supping with foreign enemies of Zimbabwe and of fellow sister states for our nation’s progressive march forward into a better future for all citizens.

What therefore stands out as possibly the only value to engender collective progress into a bright future for all Zimbabweans — and others elsewhere — is none other than unmitigated patriotism for all political players and the generality of Zimbabweans for whom no other country but this one exists as the earthly home that God created for us, His creatures, before those who believe in Him through His son, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, proceed to their second home of profound joy, Heaven.

Therefore, if love, peace and stability collectively become our human nature, God’s great, operating grace cannot fail to manifest itself as our portion with the Midas’ touch on all the things upon which we lay our hands.
