A BOTTLE store attendant from Plumtree, who attacked a patron with a machete for demanding his $1 deposit, was yesterday sentenced to five years.

Esau Ndlovu (23) turned vicious and struck Mr Tyson Ncube (27) with a machete on the neck and chest after he demanded his deposit for two empty bottles.

He accused Mr Ncube of disturbing him while he played fejafeja (betting).

The court heard that Mr Ncube sustained a deep cut following the assault. Ndlovu had pleaded not guilty to attempted murder before magistrate, Mr Joseph Mabeza, but was convicted due to overwhelming evidence.

The accused who was sentenced to five years will, however, serve an effective three years after two years of the sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
