CHRONICLE Senior Sports Reporter Ricky Zililo on Thursday scooped the Zifa Southern Region Journalist of the Year Award, with B-Metro’s Raymond Jaravaza and Sakheleni Nxumalo of Newsday emerging as joint runners-up.

The awards, organised by Zifa Southern Region and Top Goal Scorer of the Month sponsors Nokel Security Company, are aimed at honouring outstanding work being done by sports scribes from the region.

Organisers felt that Zililo’s work was exceptional, deep and well-informed, and hence stood a cut above the rest in 2017. From in-depth match previews and reviews, his work stood out.

He walked away with a medal and a trophy.

“I feel honoured winning this award. I would like to thank my colleagues for their support. This award goes to the Chronicle sports desk because in this profession it’s all about team work,” said Zililo.

“I would also like to extend a special thanks to the sponsors for this initiative. Our aim is to continue giving coverage to the lower divisions with the same vigour as we do with the topflight league.

“To my family and colleagues thank you because you were always there for me even when things got tough. I feel greatly humbled by this award and it shows that my hard work is being recognised,” he said.

The awards coincided with an end of year party the Zifa Southern Region organised for scribes and was attended by the Sports Journalists Association (Spoja) Southern Region members as well the Zifa Southern Region leadership led by chairman Musa Mandaza.
