A BOTSWANA-based clearing agent has been arrested after being found in possession of R28 000 in counterfeit notes.

Ephraim Thandindaba (39) of Madlambuzi allegedly used one of the fake notes to buy soya chunks from a Plumtree businessman.

He is employed by Manhlokonono Rendo Freight of Briston in Botswana.

Thandindaba appeared before Plumtree resident magistrate Mr Taurai Manwere on Thursday facing charges of fraud and possession of articles for criminal use.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to Monday for trial.

Prosecutor Mr Elisha Mazorodze opposed granting him bail, arguing that he was a flight risk.

Mr Mazorodze told the court that on November 4 at around 3:30PM Thandindaba bought soya chunks from Mr Edwin Ndlovu’s shop in Bambadzi using a fake R200 note and was given R193 change.

“The following morning at around 11AM, Mr Ndlovu discovered the offence and made a police report,” said the prosecutor.

Investigations, the court heard, led to Thandindaba’s arrest.

Upon his arrest he made indications leading to the recovery of counterfeit R200 notes hidden under a brick at his homestead.

The notes which had the same serial number amounted to R28 000. — @richardmuponde
