AN 80-year-old woman is suspected to have been killed and left hanging to make it look as if she committed suicide, police confirmed.

Marita Dube of Hakuna village under Chief Maduna in Kezi was found seated with a scarf tied around her neck and fixed to a roof beam in her makeshift hut on Wednesday last week.

The old woman’s body was discovered at around 8AM by her sister Nelly Dube (77).

Marita had a deep cut on her forehead and lacerations on her palms.

Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway.

“I can confirm we received a report of an elderly woman who was found dead at her home. A scarf was tied on her neck and she was in a sitting position.

“She had a deep cut on her forehead, indicating she could have been hit with a blunt object before she was tied to the roof to simulate suicide,” she said.

Asst Insp Mangena appealed to members of the public who may have information regarding Marita’s death to contact the police.

A villager who preferred not to be named said Gogo MaDube was discovered by her younger sister who had come to give her groceries from Bulawayo.

“Gogo was a cheerful woman, a granny to the whole community and we really don’t know the reason why she could have killed herself. Maybe someone wanted to rob her because elderly people are known to keep valuables.

“We pray police investigations lead to the suspects and they be brought to book for this murder. Who murders an 80-year- old woman?” asked the villager.
