THE community of Mangwe District is holding a 15-kilometre cycling race today as part of a health promotion campaign.
The event, which is the first of its kind to be held in the district, has attracted about 100 cyclists from Mangwe, Plumtree and Bulilima districts.
Chairperson of the project, Nkosilathi Muswela, said after the race competitors and villagers would gather for an education session on health related issues.
“We have about 100 participants who have registered to participate in the competition. Although some of them have not yet paid the $2 affiliation fee, we expect them to have done so before the end of today (yesterday),” he said.

Muswela said the race had both male and female participants who have been divided into two age group categories.
The first will be the below 35 years and the second being 36 years and above category.

Muswela said the race came as an initiative from community members who felt the district had to diversify its sporting activities.
“We are used to having soccer and netball tournaments only and for once the community felt they needed diversity and they then approached authorities with the suggestion of a cycle race,” he said.

Muswela said the race would begin with a procession within Plumtree town and from there competitors would race from the town up to Mqegula Business Centre in Izimnyama which is located about 15 kilometres from the starting point.

He pointed out that one main winner would be selected from each category and would be awarded with prize money and a medal.
