FOUNDERS High School in Bulawayo has proved that it is dedicated to developing a supportive learning environment as evidenced by a rise in performance at Advanced Level as shown by the 2023 Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) results.

The school attained an impressive 91,2 percent pass rate, up from 90,7 percent the previous year and 84 percent in the 2021 examinations.

According to the school’s headmistress, Mrs Dorothea Moyo, this achievement reflects the collective effort and commitment of both learners and teachers.

Mrs Moyo expressed her satisfaction with the improvement of the school’s performance adding that the pupils can achieve more with further assistance.

“I’m happy with the results although I feel we can still do better given our potential. I’m confident the graph will continue to gradually go up. With a lot of motivation, these learners can do much better,” said Mrs Moyo.

She said Founders High School has implemented several strategies to improve its academic performance. “Supervised study sessions for A-level students were instrumental to these good results.”

“When others were going home, they would remain behind working on past exam papers and doing revision, at times they were helped by their teachers,” said Mrs Moyo.

Recognising the importance of full preparation, the school also invited external facilitators to conduct seminars for A-level classes.

These seminars provided valuable insights into what to expect in exams as well as equip the students with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in their exams.

“Our teachers work as a team and that’s a factor that contributed to the school’s success. We will intensify staff development because once the teachers are well-equipped, they’re able to deliver resulting in their pupils doing well in public exams.

“We will continue inviting Zimsec markers to assist both our teachers and pupils like we did last year,” said Mrs Moyo.

By fostering strong partnerships among teachers, students and parents, the school aims to create an environment conducive for academic success.

“We want to strengthen the triangle of the teacher, student and parent to ensure better performance. We will also try to incentivise our teachers so that they go all out to assist students to pass,” said Mrs Moyo.

Two female learners who were studying commercial subjects; Miss Nothabo Gwanzura and Miss Tariro Chikukuza, attained 15 points each.
