THE government has identified seven farms to resettle Tokwe-Mukorsi flood victims who are still living at Chingwizi in Mwenezi district, Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Cde Shuvai Mahofa has said. Speaking after visiting Chingwizi families yesterday, Cde Mahofa said the government has secured 2,000 hectares to resettle about 3,000 families who are at Chingwizi.

Each family would be given a five-hectare plot, which is an improvement from one- hectare plots they are presently occupying at Chingwizi, she added.

She said the pegging of plots, drilling of boreholes and building of clinics as well as schools was in progress.

She urged those who are yet to receive compensation from the government to be patient given the obtaining economic situation.

Cde Mahofa said the government was seized with the issue of compensation but flood victims should be relocated to the new plots and most of them have already been pegged.

To date, the government has disbursed $2 million out of the estimated $9 million for compensation and a quarter of the affected families have received payments ranging from $600 to $15,000 depending on the developments on their original homes at the time of evacuation.

To those who are resisting relocation over compensation issues, Cde Mahofa said: “There’s no way people can be left to live on arid land like this. Conditions aren’t ideal for human habitation here let alone the land which isn’t arable. You’re moved to far much better places and as we speak establishment of social amenities, boreholes and road infrastructure is at an advanced stage.”
