Lions kill bathing tourist

Peter John Evershed (59) of Number 2 Kingsmead Drive, Borrowdale, Harare, was at Chitake Camping site in Makuti with his wife Jane and other tourists when tragedy struck.
Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident that took place last week.

Evershed went to bath under a tree just a few metres from the campsite at the weekend at around 4:15pm when a pride of lions suddenly surrounded him before attacking him.
“He screamed for help from other tourists who quickly drove to the scene flashing their lights in a bid to scare away the marauding lions,” he said.

It took the intervention of safari operator Mr Steven Pop, who fired a shot in the air, to scare off the lions.
He was, however, dead by the time the lions fled as he had sustained a deep gash in the throat.

A report was made at Makuti Police Station and the body was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Insp Mabgweazara urged people to be extremely cautious when in areas with roaming wildlife.

“We expect that tourists take the necessary precautions when venturing into game areas, especially in places like Makuti and Kariba,” he said.

Meanwhile, a buffalo gored two villagers who tried to chase it out of a cattle pen in the Sipepa area under Chief Matapula.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Insp Trust Ndlovu, said a villager — Mr Gideon Ncube — saw the female buffalo in Mr Mehluli Ncube’s pen.

“He alerted Fani Mpofu and Moikeli Mlilo who proceeded to the pen with the intention of chasing the buffalo out.”
However, the buffalo charged at Mpofu and knocked him down before tossing Mlilo into the air.
