A PLUMTREE man has been ordered to perform 420 hours of community service for stabbing his friend with a knife after using his cup without permission during a drinking spree.

Edson Moyo (25) was convicted on his own plea of guilty to assault by Plumtree magistrate, Mr Taurai Manwere. He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment which was wholly suspended on condition that he performs 420 hours of community service at the Plumtree Magistrate’s Court.

Prosecuting, Mr Elisha Mazorodze said the altercation between Moyo and Tonderai Masani (20) started after Moyo used his friend’s plastic beer cup without permission.

“On 16 April at around 11PM, Masani was drinking beer with his friends at a bar in Plumtree and Moyo was among them. He left his plastic beer cup that he was using to drink beer on the table and went out.

“Upon returning, he found Moyo drinking from his plastic cup which infuriated Masani. He confronted Moyo and demanded to know why he was using his beer cup without permission and a misunderstanding arose,” said Mr Mazorodze.

He said Moyo drew a knife from his pocket and stabbed Masani in the stomach and fled from the bar.

Mr Mazorodze said the matter was reported to the police resulting in Moyo’s arrest.

He said Masani sustained injuries as a result of the attack and was referred to Plumtree District Hospital for treatment.

In passing sentence, Mr Manwere lashed out at Moyo for stabbing his friend thereby putting his life at risk over a petty issue.

“Let this be a lesson to you because you could have cost your friend his life and you could be facing a more serious offence just because of a petty issue,” he said.
