MATOBO Amateur Sports Association (Masa) in collaboration with Sikhethimpilo held an annual HIV and Aids awareness campaign soccer tournament in Maphisa at the weekend.

Sikhethimpilo is an Aids awareness organisation that operates in Matabeleland South.

The games were meant to come up with four teams for the semi-finals to be held in Mbembeswane on September 15. Three slots were decided with The Venue, St Josephs and White Rangers qualifying for the semis. The Ndabankulu and Maphisa FC match during the week will decide the last slot.

Masa secretary Siqabukile Mongameli Dube said: “The logic is to promote awareness of HIV and Aids.

We have teams from Sontala, Kezi, Matopo, Sigangatsha, Malaba, Ndabankulu and Homestead. These are the HIV/Aids hotspots. The final is scheduled for Maphisa, the HIV/Aids hottest spot in the district on September 22.”

White Rangers from Mahetshe area won their group with ease, dispatching resilient Zamanyoni 1-0 and spirited White Eagles 3-2. Malaba FC stunned Maphisa FC 1-0.

Ndabankulu held Rangers to a 2-2 draw and were then walloped 0-3 by mining side Falcon.

Falcon followed up with a 7-0 thumping of Rangers.

The Venue won all their matches, beating Desert Foxes, Sontala and Mbembeswana for top spot.
