The Midlands Pool League (MPL) curtain comes down this weekend when all the teams descend on a local club in the city centre for an end of year tournament dubbed “Goodbye 2015 Pool Tournament”.

Kudzanayi wrapped up the championship charge two weeks ago when they comfortably won after amassing 347 points from 46 matches while second placed Uptown could only manage 315 points from the same number of games.

Uptown Club will be the venue of the tournament which starts today and ends tomorrow.

Twenty four clubs have been drawn into six groups of four teams with the top two clubs progressing to the next round.

Winners of the two-day tournament are set to walk away with $200 while runners-up will take home $100.

There will also be various individual prizes on offer.

Midlands Pool League chairman, Vandirai Hove paid tribute to the clubs who managed to play this season and said the league is in the process of courting sponsors to come on board next year to increase the level of competition in the league.

“I want to extend my gratitude to all the clubs which took part this season especially after the challenges that we faced at the beginning of the year.

“As the league management, next year we hope to bring sponsors on board to bankroll the league so that we make it more exciting. We’re also looking at making sure that we increase affiliation fees so that we can reward clubs and individuals at the end of the season,” he said.

In the run-up to the just ended season, former chairman, Edward Ganyani broke away and led a splinter league which saw the league scrapping Division One as some teams joined forces with Ganyani.

Hove implored the media to support the game arguing that it is “the second most popular sport after football and it’s only when we’re in the limelight that we can also attract sponsors.”

Last year’s end of year tournament was won by MSU while Senga were the runners up.
