THE Zvishavane Town Council has partnered Mimosa Mining Company to rehabilitate some of the local authority’s major roads. Under the agreement, the platinum mining firm will avail funding for rehabilitation of Duke Street, which links the road between Bulawayo and Gweru and another road linking Masvingo and Gweru with council providing equipment and labour.

Zvishavane Town Council director of engineering services, Engineer Dominic Mapwashikwe said the cost of the project would be revealed when the project is completed at the end of May.

“In a move aimed at maintaining the town’s roads some of which are in a deplorable state, we’ve partnered Mimosa Mine, which is funding the resurfacing of two major roads in the town,” he said.

“Two roads linking the town to major highways are being resurfaced by Mimosa together with the road leading to Makwasha suburb.

“The cost of the project will only be known after the completion of the maintenance exercise, which we hope will be at the end of May.”

The local authority is also patching potholes in the town using funding from Zinara, which extended an initial disbursement of $9,000.

Zvishavane council was allocated $200,000 this year after successful acquittals on how the funds were used last year before submitting this year’s road programme.

Rehabilitation of water and sewer reticulation works is also underway through the $900,000 UNICEF funded WASH programme covering 14 small towns in the country.

Eng Mapwashikwe said among other rehabilitation programmes council was in the process of removing waste solid and rehabilitating the Mabula Waste Water Treatment plant.

“We’ve done most of the work at Mabula and we should be through with this programme by the end of August where we intend to replace old pipes for the internal sewer reticulation system of the town,” he said.

“We’ve acquired two water pumps, which act as standby pumps to the existing one in cases of faults.”
