PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has, with immediate effect, assigned roles to the newly appointed Vice Presidents, with General Constantino Chiwenga (Retired) overseeing the Defence and War Veterans Affairs Ministry while Cde Kembo Mohadi will be in charge of National Peace and Reconciliation.

Gen Chiwenga (Rtd) and Cde Mohadi were sworn in as the country’s Vice Presidents on Thursday at State House.  President Mnangagwa said the two were bringing a lot of experience and had to supervise ministers so that they perform.

In a statement yesterday, the Acting Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Mr Justin Mupamhanga said the assignments given to the two Vice Presidents were in line with the Constitution.

“In terms of the Section 99 of the Constitution, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe may assign functions to Vice Presidents to assist him/her in the discharge of his/her functions and perform any other functions including the administration of any Ministry or Department or Act of Parliament,” reads the statement.

“Accordingly, His Excellency the President, Cde E.D Mnangagwa has duly appointed Honourable Vice President General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Guvheya Dominic Nyikadzino Chiwenga to administer the Ministry of Defence and War Veterans Affairs, Honourable Vice President Kembo Campbell Dugishi Mohadi will administer the National Peace and Reconciliation portfolio.”

Speaking after they were sworn in, the two Vice Presidents pledged to work for the development of the country as assigned by the President.

Gen Chiwenga (Rtd) said he was enthusiastic about serving in his new appointment as he will still be working for the country.

“I feel good because I have to work for my country. Once we have been allocated the tasks to do then we go (on the ground). What I can tell you is that there will be team work,” said the VP.

Cde Mohadi said although he had assumed a higher office he will remain committed to serving the country as he has done previously.

“It is just an assignment like any other assignment. I have been in Government when some of you were still young but the interesting part is that I have now been put in a place whereby I will be in a position to assist the Head of State direct the country where he wants it to go,” he said. — @nqotshili.
