BULAWAYO’S top track and field athletes will battle it out at White City Stadium tomorrow for places in the provincial team for the national finals.
Those who impress will be in the team to take part in the national championships set for Hwange at the end of the month.
Bulawayo has five districts — Imbizo, Khami, Reigate, Mzilikazi and Bulawayo Central.
Bulawayo Metropolitan headmasters’ spokesperson Njabulo Bango said preparations were at an advanced stage for a flawless event.

“Districts are busy finalising their teams. Everything is set for the competition, now we are just doing final touches,” he said.
Bango said long distances and field events will be contested for tomorrow while track events will be on Friday.

“We will start with the 800 and 1,500m for Under-13 and 14s, also the field events will be held on Thursday, then the programme will continue on Friday,” he said.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Bulawayo Province has started preparations for the National Athletics Championships set for Peterhouse in Marondera next week.

The country’s 10 provinces will clash over two days of competitive action on March 20-21.
The competition will be used to select athletes to represent the country in the Confederation of Schools Sport Association of Southern Africa (Cossasa) Championships to be held in Botswana in May.

Bulawayo athletics head-in-charge, Peter Gambiza said their biggest challenge is to overcome last year’s embarrassing showing by the province.
“If you recall, last year we came last so now we are hoping to do better and we have a crop of  promising athletes who are capable of scooping a number of gold medals.
“All we want is to move from the last position and to produce a number of athletes that will travel to Botswana,” he said.

Among top athletes that will gun for gold in the national finals are Yvonne Vanhuvaone, Linet Furera, Andile Khumalo and long distance runner Patience Gurure.
