US$100 000 gold money heist sets miners in Shurugwi on high alert Dr Smelly Dube

MINERS in Shurugwi town are on high alert after two prominent gold mines, Tebekwe and Zuva Gold mines had their employees robbed of a combined total of US$100 000 soon after selling their gold to Fidelity Printers in the mining town.

In the first incident, police said an employee of Zuva Gold was coming from Fidelity Printers when he was followed by a Honda Fit vehicle that had three occupants.

The occupants pounced on the unsuspecting driver and robbed him of US$70 000 before fleeing from the scene.

In the second incident, an employee of Tebekwe mine owned, by businesswoman Dr Smelly Dube also coming from selling gold at Fidelity Printers was again followed by Toyota Quantum vehicles before the occupants pounced on him and went away with US$30 000.

Dr Dube confirmed the incident, adding that all miners convened a meeting with the police to map a way forward in terms of protecting their assets from robbers.

“We are very worried about these robberies targeting gold miners coming from Fidelity Printers here in Shurugwi. We have since engaged the police and they said they will expedite investigations into the robbers as well as increase their presence in town,” she said.
