as political violence continued unabated in the suburb.
Andrew Zvidzai was in the company of a colleague when he was attacked and killed at around 9pm last Tuesday.
He died on admission at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
Police at Matapi Police Station yesterday confirmed the incident and said investigations were still in progress.
“The two were coming from Matute Beerhall when they were confronted by about 10 people who ordered them to chant slogans,” sources close to the investigations said yesterday.
Zvidzai then fled from the scene and some of the suspects gave chase until they caught up with him.
According to police, he was stripped half-naked and assaulted all over the body.
He sustained bruises all over his body, a broken rib and head injuries, police said.
Some passers-by reportedly took him to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he died on admission.
Investigations have so far revealed that there was a group of MDC-T youths who were planted in the area last week and are believed to be behind such violent acts.
Zanu-PF Politburo member Cde Tendai Savanhu expre-ssed concern over the political violence.
He urged his party’s supporters not to take the law into their own hands.
“There have been attacks, petrol bombs and now they have killed one of our supporters. And my question is why should people fight and do this?” Cde Savanhu said.
He said MDC-T had seen that it will not win the elections and was now resorting to violence.
“This is because they don’t want the elections to be held. They want to give a picture that there is violence in Zimbabwe.
“All we are saying is that this should stop forthwith. We are a peace-loving party and won’t resort to revenging,” said Cde Savanhu.
He urged law enforcement agents to ensure that people who were behind the fatal attack are brought to book.
MDC-T Harare provincial spokesperson Mr Willias Madzimure yesterday said it was disturbing to note that people were attacking each other.
“If your life has been made so difficult in your country where would you go? Our supporters are not behind this, but Zanu-PF is behind all these attacks,” he said.
He said they were the victims and they were now being portrayed as the perpetrators.
“We have no reason to perpetrate violence against our people, especially in Harare where we won all the Parliamentary and council seats,” he said.
Zanu-PF holds one constituency, Harare South.
He urged people to desist from violence for the development of the country.
Police say the violence is being perpetrated by suspected MDC-T youths.
They recently said investigations have revealed that the attacks and petrol bombings are being organised at the so-called MDC-T safe houses.
Five petrol bombs were thrown at the Zanu-PF district office in Mbare on Monday last week in what was suspected to be an attack by MDCT youths.
Police said property and clothes were destroyed when five petrol bombs were detonated at Zanu-PF’s Joshua Nkomo district offices in Matapi at around 1am yesterday.
No one was injured.
MDCT has, however, accused Zanu-PF of fomenting violence, though police statistics show otherwise.
Early this month, a suspected petrol bomb was detonated at Mbare’s Siya-So market stalls in what preliminary investigations indicate was an attack by suspected MDCT youths.
Timber worth more than US$600 000 was destroyed in the bombing, which occurred a few days after Zanu-PF’s youth chair for Harare Province – Cde Jimu Kunaka – was assaulted by MDCT youths at a food court in the city.
Earlier in the week, seven MDC-T youths were arrested on allegations of stoking violence in Mbare.
There has also been violence in Budiriro and Epworth, which police suspect were orchestrated by MDCT.
