A BULAWAYO man allegedly battered his wife with a knobkerrie all over her body when he discovered that she was talking on her cellphone with her ex-husband, after he ordered her to cut ties with him.Bekezela Ncube, 44, of Mpopoma suburb went on to choke his wife Gladys Mhlanga and punched her on the face several times.

Ncube appeared before Provincial magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo yesterday facing a physical abuse charge. He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to April 30.

Prosecuting Nomzamo Ndlovu told the court that on Thursday, at around 10PM, Ncube took his wife’s cellphone and started going through the call log.

“While going through the messages, he saw a message from Mhlanga’s ex-husband. He started accusing her of having an extra marital affair. He immediately grabbed her by the neck and choked her,” said Ndlovu.

She said Ncube went on to assault her with fists on her face.

The court heard that Ncube took his knobkerrie and assaulted Mhlanga all over her body.

Mhlanga was referred to Mpilo Central Hospital  for treatment. Her face was still puffed when she appeared in court yesterday and one of her eyes was swollen shut.
