Police have arrested a Shurugwi man who stabbed his wife and left her for dead over payment of bills. Lesley Jamanda, 23, of house number 144 Sebanga 3, appeared before regional magistrate Morgan Nemadire on Thursday facing attempted murder charges. He pleaded guilty to the charge and the matter was remanded to April 11.

Prosecuting, Ndamuka Chikuni told the court that on February 1 this year, Jamanda was involved in a verbal fight with his wife, Margaret Sibanda, over the payment of outstanding water and Zesa bills.

The court heard that Jamanda then produced a knife from his pocket and stabbed his wife once in the neck and ran away.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Jamanda.

A medical report which was produced in court as an exhibit indicated that the complainant sustained a deep cut which penetrated her spinal cord leading to the swelling of the neck.

The injury left her bedridden and she can no longer relieve herself without the use of tubes.
Dr P Musukwe from Shurugwi District Hospital who appeared as a state witness told the court that Jamanda’s actions crippled Sibanda permanently.

“The injuries sustained by Sibanda show that she won’t be able to walk for the rest of her life since she is now paralysed,” said Dr Musukwe.
