Woman demands $540 maintenance

A BULAWAYO woman yesterday dragged her ex-husband to court demanding $540 in spousal maintenance and the upkeep of the couple’s two children.

Mrs Linda Nyamandi told the court Mr Luckson Nyamandi tricked her into selling their family shop and later kicked her out of their matrimonial home.

“I worked as a shopkeeper and after we sold the shop, he said we would establish a bakery.

“He also told me he would use some of the money to start a maize business. However, he put his friend’s name on the lease papers and told me to sign.

“I later realised that I had been tricked after he started abusing me, starving me and eventually he threw me out of the house. I need money to take care of our children and for rentals,” said Mrs Nyamandi.

In response Mr Nyamandi told the court he could only afford $100 per month and also pay school fees for the children.

“I also have responsibilities, when she left our home she took all the property with her, I need to replace all that she took,” he said.

Mrs Nyamandi shot back saying with the way she knows him he was only making promises that he would not fulfil.

“He is saying he will pay the kids’ fees when he has never paid anything towards their schooling. We are in debt as it is. Our first born is at a boarding school we haven’t paid fees for almost two terms.

“The money that he is offering is not enough for me and the children, I can’t accept that,” she said.

The two had an argument which the magistrate Ms Ulukile Mlea stopped saying they could argue all day and still not come up with a solution.

“This matter has been postponed to October 30 for judgment,” she said. — @LissahMangena
