PLATINUM mining firm Zimplats last week donated books worth $8,000 to the Bulawayo Public Library as part of its corporate social responsibility.Zimplats’ head of corporate affairs, Busi Chindove, said the donation was meant to promote a reading culture in young people and enhance education standards.

“Reading and availability of reading materials is an important tool towards social development in the country. As Zimplats, we feel this small gesture will go a long way in moulding young people that will assist in economic growth,” said Chindove.

“Zimplats’ community development projects fall within four specific focus areas, which are education, health, water and sanitation.
“Since the company began operations we have spent above $200 million towards community projects.”

Chindove urged other businesses to take part in assisting communities they operate in.

“The minerals we mine are not ours but belong to the whole nation thus they must benefit everyone. I urge all organisations to assist in economic development,” she said.

Bulawayo Public Library chief librarian Letshani Ndlovu commended Zimplats’ gesture.

“This is not the first time Zimplats is assisting us, they are now our partners. These books are relevant to our local syllabus and library users are going to benefit profoundly,” she said.

Zimplats is 87 percent owned by the world’s second largest platinum producer Impala Platinum. It has so far assisted in infrastructural development in schools and clinics in Mhondoro and Ngezi area.
