Zimbabweans have been urged to fight illegal sanctions imposed on the country by signing the Anti-Sanctions Petition launched by President Mugabe on Wednesday.
Addressing scores of people gathered at a Field Day hosted by Mr Shakie Tahwasha in Murombedzi yesterday, Zanu-PF Central Committee member Cde Nelson Samkange said the illegal sanctions were not targeted and affected all Zimbabweans across political persuasions.
“I urge you to sign the Anti-Sanctions Petition in large numbers. These sanctions are not targeted on President Mugabe and his ministers but are targeted on the Zimbabwean populace.
“The illegal sanctions have adversely affected our economy and as Zimbabweans we should register our displeasure through this petition,” he said.
Cde Samkange urged Zimbabwe’s political, religious and community leaders to unite in denouncing sanctions.
Zvimba District Co-ordinating Committee secretary for indigenisation and economic empowerment, Cde Francis Mukwangwariwa, said sanctions were a national issue requiring a national response.
He said the campaign against sanctions was not a Zanu-PF programme and all the parties in the inclusive Government had committed themselves to their removal when they signed the Global Political Agreement.
“We should speak with one voice as Zimbabweans against this scourge. It is affecting everyone and our political leaders have expressed the will to fight them through their signatures in the Global Political Agreement.
“Any party, which is reneging on its GPA commitment, is actually a proponent of the ruinous sanctions,” he said.
Cde Mukwangwariwa warned the nation to be wary of agents of illegal regime change hiding behind the façade of non-governmental organisations.
He said people should stop relying on food handouts from Europe and the United States and instead take the empowerment route.
“We should not continue to work for those who once colonised us. Our political independence needs to be consolidated economically and we should take advantage of indigenisation policies in this regard,” he said.
Cde Mukwangwariwa also donated a plough to Mr Tahwasha who had earlier won ammonium nitrate and maize seed for being the best conservation farmer in the district.
