A MAN was killed by an elephant in Victoria Falls on Saturday, hours before a villager from Binga was gored to death by a lone buffalo, police said.
Steven Mathe, 22, of BH18 in Monde, had his body “mashed” by a raging bull elephant as he walked home shortly after 7PM.
Victoria Falls police say Mathe encountered a herd of elephants near a rubbish dumpsite close to Masuwe River, some 10km out of Victoria Falls.
Chief Superintendent Jairos Chiwona, the Officer Commanding Victoria Falls Police said Mathe suffered “multiple bodily injuries” after being charged by one of the elephants.

A witness who watched police recover Mathe’s body told Chronicle: “His body was totally mashed. It was an overkill.”
Some 164km away in the Kavula area of Binga, also in Matabeleland North, a 70-year-old man- whose name has not been released – was gored to death by a buffalo on Sunday morning while out in the fields with his wife.

Hwange Rural District Council vice-chairperson Mathew Muleya said they were urging people living close to national parks to avoid travelling at night.
Caroline Washaya-Moyo of the Parks and Wildlife Authority said: “We’re urging the Victoria Falls community to report the presence of dangerous animals to either their nearest police or Parks offices.”

Last month, a man was attacked and injured by a buffalo in Victoria Falls town centre and two weeks ago a boy walking to school in Dete was killed by a lion which was later put down by rangers.
