BASKETBALL enthusiasts in Kwekwe are in for a treat this weekend when 16 teams take part in the Midlands Basketball Union (MBU) pre-season tournament.

The annual tournament is a curtain raiser to the provincial basketball league that is set to kick-off on September 17.

MBU secretary Matthew Tumbare said all is now set for the tournament.

“Everything is now in place for the pre-season tournament, which is used by clubs to gauge their strengths and preparedness ahead of the season. It is also an opportunity for players to determine their fitness levels ahead of the season,” said Tumbare.

“This year we have also invited three teams from Kadoma to feature as guest teams. As a province, we are confident that we will witness some good basketball over the weekend.”

Unicorns won the 2015 men’s tournament, while MSU were the ladies’ champs. Unicorns are touted to pose a threat to MSU in the ladies’ category, while Zvishavane Hawks should challenge Unicorns in the men’s section.

Other teams that will feature at the tournament are Titans, Falcons, Steelers, FAFB and Drifters. League newcomers Red Bulls and Cheetahs, both from Shurugwi participate in the men’s event, while another Shurugwi outfit Lady Bull has also affiliated in the women’s league.

Tumbare said they were aspiring to make the league more competitive by looking for a sponsor to bankroll the provincial league.

The first round of league matches will be staged in Zvishavane at the Maglas and McAdams Courts.
