All set for Region V mascot unveiling

ALL is set for the unveiling of the African Union Sports Council Region Five Under-20 Youth Games mascot today which will also tour the city of Bulawayo.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Andrew Langa will unveil the mascot at St Patrick’s Hotel this morning before it is paraded around the city centre and high density suburbs before returning through the low density suburbs.

The city will play host to the Games which will run from December 5-14.

Zambia, the Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia, Mozambique, Malawi, Botswana, Angola, Lesotho and the host nation Zimbabwe will participate at the Games.

In an interview yesterday, local organising committee director Kennedy Ndebele said the mascot unveiling was part of the Games’ awareness programme.

“The African Union Sports Council Region Five Under-20 Youth Games have started and what is left is December competition. It all started the day Zimbabwe was given the Games’ torch. The unveiling of the mascot and taking it for a roadshow is more of giving the people of Bulawayo ownership of the Games.

“There are a number of activities that we have lined up with internationally acclaimed dance group Iyasa and comedian Babongile Skhonjwa providing entertainment throughout the activities,” Ndebele said.

After the official unveiling ceremony at St Patrick’s, the mascot will be taken through Leopold Takawira Avenue to Tredgold Building area where there will be a brief stopover with the roadshow proceeding through Basch Street into Luveve Road.

The mascot will pass through Makokoba, Mzilikazi, Nguboyenja, Matshobana before the procession turns left into Mpopoma through Nketa Drive up to Khami Road and pass through White City Stadium to Siyephambili Drive.

It will then be taken to Nkulumane Complex, to Sekusile Shopping Centre in Nkulumane, Nketa, before taking another route back to Siyephambili Drive, Bellevue into Wellington Road in Montrose, then Matopos Road before returning to the Bulawayo Small City Hall for the closing ceremony.
