A CHIREDZI-based retired army captain has been fined $200 or 90 days in prison for pointing a gun at Chiredzi West MP Darlington Chiwa’s wife, Miriam Dhanda.

Faster Gono of Hippo Valley Estates and Zanu-PF Ward 18 Chitepo branch chairman pointed a firearm at the party’s secretary for indigenisation, Dhanda of Hingestone Estate, Triangle accusing her of belonging to expelled former Vice President Joice Mujuru’s cabal.

This happened during Zanu PF ward restructuring elections last year.

Masvingo magistrate Sibonginkosi Mkandla on Tuesday found Gono guilty of contravening the Firearms Act.

He had pleaded not guilty but was convicted due to overwhelming evidence.

Mkandla said it was clear that Gono pointed a gun at Dhanda as he claimed her husband had called him names and accused him of being a gay.

“The court has been left with little doubt that the accused produced a gun and threatened the complainant. This is because the State witnesses gave credible evidence against Gono,” said Mkandla.

Gono said: “I didn’t point a gun at the complainant. If I had produced a gun as it is alleged there was going to be serious commotion.”

Prosecuting, Shamiso Makovere told the court that sometime in October last year, Gono who was part of Zanu-PF members gathering for district restructuring elections at Kamba Primary School told the members that the they were not supposed to vote for Gamatox candidates, in reference to the Mujuru loyalists.

“On October 24 at around 2PM Gono produced a gun and pointed it at Wilford Shave then at Dhanda, resulting in the crowd dispersing,” said Makovere.
