A MAN from Bulawayo died after he was trampled by an elephant while at work in Victoria Falls on Tuesday evening, police have confirmed.

The deceased has been identified as Mr Emmanuel Mhuka (49) of Pumula East suburb.

Mr Mhuka was employed as a security guard by Nokel Security and at the time of his death he was deployed at a communications booster near Kazungula Border Post.

Acting Officer Commanding Victoria Falls District Superintendent Dominic Sibanda said Mhuka’s body was recovered on Wednesday morning by a search team comprising police officers and rangers from the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.

“I can confirm that we received a report of a man who was killed by an elephant at a NetOne booster at the 69km peg along the Victoria Falls-Kazungula Highway,” said Supt Sibanda.

He said the deceased’s family had been notified.

“A search team found the body about 10 metres away from the road. We want to urge members of the public to avoid walking in secluded places especially where there are wild animals,” said Supt Sibanda.

Mr Mhuka was walking along the main road from the border post with a workmate Mr Steven Chahomone.

When they were near their work station, they encountered a herd of elephants.

The two reportedly avoided the herd which had crossed to one side of the road but one bull charged at them.

Mr Mhuka and Mr Chahomone fled into the bush but unfortunately met another herd forcing them to make a U-turn. It was then that they came face to face with the charging bull from the first herd which then attacked and killed Mr Mhuka.

Mr Chahomone managed to escape.

He reported the matter to police at Kazungula Police Station who attended the scene but couldn’t locate the body or the elephants as it was dark.

The search resumed on Wednesday leading to the recovery of Mr Mhuka’s body.
